It has always been an aspiration for the Client to create and deliver a high-quality Cancer Care/Hospice Centre that meets people's needs while ensuring sustainable development and combating climate change. It is a delicate balance that requires careful consideration—delivering a robust green infrastructure network that improves connectivity. While creating a space for healing and interaction that will help everyone feel connected, the project will include an intricate design that meets the needs of what it takes to be a person dealing with and healing from cancer. In addition to research facilities and medical operating rooms with a landscape design for particular needs, the research would have to go above and beyond due to the vast psychology that will be brought forward in the design for the people.
‘The Floating Centre’ would be located on an industrial area and amusement park site.
The River Rea enters the Quarter from Birmingham’s southern suburbs and flows northeast, passing between Rea Street and Birchall Street, which are covered by structures and parking lots. The 1890s engineered brick channel, which was the subject of large-scale engineering projects in Victorian times, is nearing the end of its expected useful life and has to be replaced to sustain the next phase of development.
Due to the Rea’s flashy and unpredictable nature, which has been made worse by dense urban development, numerous land ownership issues, and climate change, Birmingham’s frequently overlooked river has experienced fluvial and surface water flooding events over the past ten years, which have impacted properties and infrastructure.
However, the River Rea can present a chance and catalyze regeneration if approached correctly.
However, architectural manipulation of space can catalyse a healing environment that may influence a person’s emotional and physical behaviour. Architecture has the potential to heal.
Therefore, the concept design was mainly focused on humans. The Golden Ratio states that to align with this harmonic principle is to open yourself to the cosmos' sustaining, beautifying, energizing, and rejuvenating aspects.
The project was a great success. It was completed on time, and the client was very satisfied with the final result. The design plan was executed effectively, and the resulting space has exceeded expectations. The team also finished construction under the calculated budget.
